The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is to care for injured, sick or orphaned wildlife and return them to the wild. RVWS also offers advice on co-existing peacefully with wildlife and provides humane, cost-effective ways to prevent or solve wildlife conflicts.

 

As we do not receive any government funding, the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary relies entirely on donations and grants to continue our wildlife care.

We're hiring a Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager


The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (RVWS) is the only authorized wildlife rehabilitator of wild mammals and turtles in the Ottawa area. RVWS cares for approximately 500 animals in-centre annually, with the help of full-time interns and a network of volunteers. 


RVWS is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic leader to help manage wildlife rehabilitation operations and help RVWS grow to the next level. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager reports to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate will be a registered veterinary technician or have a combination of post-secondary education and related experience, have a minimum of three years proven experience in wildlife rehabilitation, and a minimum of two years of supervisory/management experience in a related setting. 


Duties and Responsibilities


Wildlife Rehabilitation Operations

Manage the day-to-day wildlife rehabilitation operations to ensure that patient welfare meets the highest standards (e.g. triage and assessment, medical/veterinary care and treatment plans, diet plans, feeding and weaning schedules, housing requirements, environmental enrichment, release) 

Identify the need for and oversee veterinary care, including decisions of euthanasia

Assist with wildlife care as required

Monitor and track wildlife health and status

Monitor overall workload and assist with establishing intake limits

Identify appropriate release sites and manage releases

Liaise with MNR and report species at risk

Assist with MNR reporting and inspections

Ensure that the facility and caging is always clean and presentable

Ensure the proper maintenance of the facility and caging, including need for repairs and expansion

Develop and implement policies, procedures and practices 

Maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment 

Monitor inventory, order supplies and manage donated supplies

Maintain wildlife rehabilitation records, and prepare statistics and reports

Other responsibilities as required 


Communications and outreach

Manage the wildlife hotline and emails, and respond to public inquiries, including wildlife emergencies and human/wildlife conflicts

Assist with managing the website and developing content as needed

Assist with developing and managing an education program

Assist with developing and managing newsletters, e-news, social media postings, etc.

Maintain appropriate records, photos and video to support communications

Act as a spokesperson for the organization; give presentations as required

Assist with public relations and media

Represent the organization at and manage community events 

Network with other organizations as needed


Human resources planning and management

Assist with determining volunteer and staffing requirements 

Assist with recruitment, interviews and selection of volunteers and staff

Develop and maintain shift schedules 

Train and oversee volunteers and staff 

Monitor volunteer and staff performance and conduct performance reviews

Develop and manage volunteer recognition and volunteer communications

Maintain human resources records and their ensure privacy/confidentiality 


Financial planning and management

Administer and monitor expenditures within delegated budget

Assist with developing operational goals, budgets and strategic plans to guide the organization

Assist with researching funding sources, developing fundraising plans and writing funding proposals

Participate in fundraising activities as required


Qualifications


The ideal candidate will have:

At least three years experience in wild mammal and turtle rehabilitation and human/wildlife conflict resolution 

At least two years supervisory/management experience in a related setting

Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or other post-secondary education and combination of experience in wildlife rehabilitation equivalent to a veterinary technician level (registered veterinary technician or veterinary background an asset)

Exceptional and proven interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational and leadership skills

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Strong presentation skills

Strong computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office software

Legally entitled to work in Canada

Valid Ontario driver’s license with no record of major or repeated traffic offenses

Proof of a protective rabies antibody level

Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds


Term and Compensation


This is a seven-month contract position from March/April to September/October, with possibility of extension as a permanent position. Planning and fundraising duties occur primarily during the off-season (October to March). Some weekends and evenings required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
